National External Quality Assurance Programme


NEQAPP is a non-profit external quality assurance program being run by AFIP, endeavor to contribute towards the assurance of quality in laboratories at national level in the interest of public health and safety. In 1996 at AFIP Rawalpindi, NEQAPP was launched as a pilot project in Chemical Pathology with the aim to expand it to other disciplines of Pathology. Over the period of time this has gained immense popularity and at present the leading clinical laboratories of Pakistan including those in defence hospitals, teaching institutions (medical colleges and postgraduate medical institutes), public and private sectors, are voluntarily participating in this study.
Clinical Laboratories interested in participating in NEQAPP programme have to register their lab on NEQAPP webpage. Registration in a cycle is opened once a year. When cycle is started, registration process turns closed. Opening of registration for NEQAPP is announced on AFIP website.
Labs will only be considered for cycle participation, once they have paid the participation cost. A fee structure has been devised on no-profit-no-loss policy. The cost of only quality control material will be charged to participating labs in NEQAPP programme. Fee for a complete cycle must be submitted prior to participation in the first quarter.
After registration, samples for quality control are sent to labs on quarterly basis. After receiving samples labs analyze the QC material and enters result of QC material on NEQAPP webpage. Result is evaluated and performance report is sent to the participating lab with the next sample for the quarter. After successful participation in a cycle, labs are awarded certificate of participation.
