Armed Forces Institute of Pathology (AFIP) is one of the country’s leading tertiary care laboratories, which has the honor of serving the country since 1947. It started functioning in a purpose built building. Later on, this institute underwent progressive expansion over the years to include separate buildings for Department of Nuclear Medicine in 1979, Advanced Diagnostic and Research Center (ADRC) in 1988 and Forensic Medical Sciences Laboratory (FMSL) in 2012. New block of AFIP was completed in 2017. It comprises Main Reception on ground floor, and Departments of Haematology, Chemical Pathology and Virology equipped with cutting edge technology and diagnostic facilities on three different floors.

Since its inception, the institute has continuously improved its infrastructure and patient care services and today it is the only lab in this region, and one of the few tertiary care labs in the world, which has all the sub specialties of Pathology under one roof. Located at the heart of Rawalpindi, this lab has large number of clientele from Northern Areas of Pakistan, Upper Punjab and the capital city. It is also a referral and reference lab for all the Armed Forces Labs in the country.

With the presence of highly qualified multi-disciplinary consultants and technical staff, active and intense training programs and innovative research activities, the institute has gained status of a role model in the country. An alma mater of Pathologists, AFIP is a story of dedication, commitment and service to its clientele. Considering the diagnostic requirements, it has the widest test repertoire possible in any analytical setup. Institute is pioneer in starting academic programs such as MCPS, FCPS, M.Phil and PhD in Pathology in the country. Institute is greatly acknowledged for the continuous and ongoing contributions in the field of research and development. Key milestones of the institute in recent years include fully functional Forensic Medical Science Laboratory (FMSL) and Department of Molecular Pathology.

Fully aware of the growing needs of community and existing challenges in the field of laboratory medicine, our vision is to provide accurate diagnostic facilities across Pakistan and to develop capabilities for Personalized Medicine. After completing 70 years of dedicated service and commitment and now with the beginning of 2018, AFIP is fully geared up to discover new borders of excellence and solace
